Meet Our Health Quality Innovators of the Year: Collaboration

October 17, 2017

Yesterday, HQI announced the recipients of our inaugural Health Quality Innovators of the Year Awards. Today, we are highlighting Calvert Hospital Pharmacy and The Daily Planet, awardees for the Collaboration category.

Maryland: Calvert Health System, Prince Frederick, MD

Calvert Health System is taking a collaborative approach to reducing opioid addiction and preventing opioid-related deaths. Initiated by collaborative efforts between the hospital pharmacy and an emergency department (ED) physician, Calvert’s Opioid Stewardship Committee was formed and is a multidisciplinary team including representation from the pharmacy, nursing, the ED, urgent care, social work, community wellness and other departments. Their stewardship activities take a multi-faceted approach to reducing opioid use including patient and family education, physician and staff education, prescribing guidelines for both the ED and inpatient units, and review of opioid use throughout the institution.

As a result, Calvert reduced opioid orders in the ED by 26 percent, opioid tablet use by 46 percent and Dilaudid IV orders by 94 percent. They are also working with the health department and other community stakeholders to educate people on the dangers of opioid misuse.

Virginia: The Daily Planet, Richmond, VA

The Daily Planet’s collaborative efforts with a broad range of partners contribute to the better health of a wide-ranging population in the Richmond area. This community health care center provides primary and behavioral health care, as well as dental and eye care to an underserved population. Its patients include the indigent; homeless; college students; middle class; people of various cultures, faiths and religions; different genders and sexual orientation; and military veterans.

Building off the success of its West Grace Street location, The Daily Planet, in partnership with Bon Secours, opened a second location, a 20-bed Medical Respite in south Richmond. This health center is staffed full time and provides convalescent care upon hospital discharge for up to 30 days for adults who do not have appropriate living arrangements to support recuperation. In all, The Daily Planet currently has more than 25 formal collaborative agreements with major organizations in Central Virginia.
