OAR of Richmond Supports Richmond-area Residents After Incarceration

October 15, 2020

OAR of Richmond is a re-entry program that works with people who are currently incarcerated in the region and those who have been released within the past 12 months. OAR’s services include case management, assisting with employment skills, computer access, clothing, transportation, and referrals for both physical and mental health.

Their programs are not income based, and eligibility requirements for services include any person 18 years or older impacted by the criminal justice system within the past year. This includes returning home from incarceration or convicted of misdemeanors or felonies.

OAR operates on a first-come, first-served basis and does use appointments. If there are special circumstances surrounding a client, OARs recommend reaching out to the Director of Programs, Hilary Page hpage@oarric.org. Otherwise, a partner can either call their main phone number with the client or give the client the phone number to call.

New intakes are completed Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

To begin the process, a person can call OAR’s phone number at 804-643-2746 and say they would like to complete a new intake. OAR will ask a series of questions (release date and contact information) and then will be put on an intake list. An intake specialist will contact the client and conduct the intake interview over the phone and assign them to a case manager.

There is no cost or application associated with the program. A person should receive a call back for an intake interview within 24 hours and it often occurs on the same day.

Due to COVID-19, OAR is operating remotely. They use a hotline service and all intakes and case management take place over the phone. They do open their office the first day of the week (usually Monday) from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. to allow for participants to pick up items (such as hygiene products, clothes, mail etc.) or sign any necessary paperwork.
